Even the best people don’t have an easy exit out of this world. Even though they radiated love, kindness, and positivity throughout their lives, their last day are met with pain, sorrow, and fatigue. So, how come? Some say it’s fear itself of death, and the unknown that drives even good people to struggle in their final days. Some say it’s a way to cleanse themselves as the last chance for redemption.
Intuitive medium, psychic, and published writer answers this question. When a follower wrote to her trying to make sense of their mother’s suffering, the author related because the same thing has happened to her own mother. However, not all suffering is bad. “For months after my mother’s death I contemplated and asked my guides to help me to understand why she and so many others suffer before passing over, ” she was. Here’s what she found out.
Sherrie saw death take its toll when she watched her own mother fade into it. “Over the course of a year, my mother went from playing tennis two hours a day to being bedridden, riddled with pain, and unable to think clearly. When she died it felt like a blessing.”
One of the worst parts of approaching death knowingly is watching the decline of the physical body. The same body that once allowed you to run now can barely achieve its most basic functions like eating or sleeping. Luckily Sherrie reminds us that the body and the soul are actually two separate entities even if they share a home for a while. When the physical body expires, it’s because the soul is ready to move on. The dying process pushes it to the front, and sometimes it needs to suffer for a moment before it heals eternally.
When thinking of the essence of the soul, without taking into account the body it lives in, we realize that the soul doesn’t abide by the same human laws. Sherrie explains: “I learned that although it appears to make no sense and be a cruel way to live out the last days of life, the soul doesn’t abide by our human perceptions. On some level, we accept and create all that happens to us.”
When it comes to suffering, there is a reassuring feeling that it’s happening for a reason. Sherrie explains that the pain is burning off negativity and karma before entering the higher vibrations of light. The body carries a lot of accumulated baggage that the soul may need to get rid of to achieve bliss. But she reminds us: “yet, it is not our conscious mind or personality and ego that makes these choices. Instead, it is the soul and spirit that perceives value and evolutionary advancement and possibilities in what in human terms is senseless and merciless.”
There are a few reasons why a person suffers in their final days and they’re not always pleasant. Sometimes even good people can really struggle. They may have lived such joyful, illuminating lives, only to take on a completely different perspective as they approach death.
The reason behind this is fear. Humans are afraid of what they don’t understand and what they can’t control. The less a person passing over feels in control, the more fear takes control over them. This makes the suffering worse because it feeds into fear.

There are times where the soul is purposely choosing to suffer now, in order to be free forever. Sherrie explains: “Sometimes we choose a slower more conscious experience of dying to become more aware of our spirit and soulful self. It is only the physical and ego self that suffers. Dying pushes the soul to the forefront. Many people become aware during the process of dying that there is a part of them that is eternal.”
Sherrie explains that her mother chose to suffer because she wanted to “burn off negativity and karma before entering the higher vibrations of light.” She was choosing to be in pain now to allow other sufferings to dissolve and leave it behind, with her physical body. This way, she was only left with positive energy to take with her into her passing. I
There are times that coming so close with death allows those who are dying to have one foot in the living world and the other into the one beyond. This gives them the ability to see their loved ones on the other side. However, the foot that still is on earth longs to hold on a bit longer because it doesn’t want to leave everyone it loves to grieve. It becomes a balancing act:
“They see their loved ones on the other side and make frequent trips into the spirit realm to check it out before they go over. Sometimes people linger and die slowly as a way to bring comfort to those left behind. It can be hard to let go.”
Even when they can see the light at the end of the tunnel, some souls stay and suffer longer just to alleviate the burden of grief from the loved ones they leave behind. They know that this is their last chance to say goodbye and that there might be words they still have left unsaid. If their suffering makes their passing over a little easier for their loved ones, they carry the burden of suffering for as long as they think is needed.
Although their loved ones may never fully feel ready to imagine their lives without them, a slower process allows them to let go with more acceptance.
While those of us still here have no way of knowing for sure what waits for us on the other side, thinking about death now could be a chance to alleviate our differing later. The more we face our fears and accept death as a part of life, the easier we make the process of passing over. There is no denying that death waits for us all even if we don’t know when. Until we do, let’s make sure to live fulfilling lives and be kind to everyone around us.
