What If Astrology Can Help Homeless Dogs Find New Homes? This Los-Angeles Dog Shelter Made It Possible

An animal shelter in Los Angeles has found an innovative way to market its dogs. It started using Astrology to better match dogs ad their needs with owners and their personalities. Just like people, dogs have their own unique traits and characteristics. These personalities traits are more compatible with certain astrological signs.

For example, the Aries puppy is described as “ambitious” and “not afraid to stick his nose into everyone’s business”. This venture has saved many dogs and actually made a difference. Here’s how.

Astrology is now a rescue tool for dogs to find compatible homes and humans. The initiative started when website-building company Squarespace partnered with Los Angeles-based adoption center Wags & Walks and NYC’s foster initiative Muddy Paws to match pets and people based on their zodiac signs.

In an interview with Reuters, they explained; “Compatibility is a huge factor when it comes to pairing a pet with a foster parent, and what better way to showcase compatibility than with astrological signs?… It’s a fun, engaging way to raise awareness for this program.”

Zodiacs Profiles Are Assigned Based On Personalities

The signs are actually based on personalities not on birth dates. This is because a lot of rescues don’t come with a birth certificate. Instead, the shelters observe how the dogs interact and what traits shine bright, then they find the zodiac profile most aligned with those traits and assign it.

There will be signs that don’t work together such as in the zodiac world some signs aren’t compatible. A volunteer explained this to Reuters: “sometimes opposites attract, so you can have a Libra with an Aries, sometimes you want a dog that is similar to your personality. So if you’re on your computer all day and you want a dog that’s just going to chill out with you, that might be best for you, and then there are some that don’t work well together. All the signs have an element of earth, water, fire, and air, so if you pick the same element, it’s usually a compatible match.”

Take Coconut, A Taurus, For Example

This is Coconut and he was assigned to the Taurus sign. This is his website description: “Tauruses are known for being stubborn, and Coconut definitely likes things his way: he needs a good balance of playtime and chill time. After an afternoon running around Will Rogers State Park in Santa Monica, Coconut would want nothing more than to come home, spread out on the couch, and binge Netflix with his foster parent!”

Plus, the end of his advertisement came with a list of signs, namely, “Pisces, Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn’ that he was estimated to be compatible with. This makes it easy for people who are interested to estimate whether the animal would be a good fit in their lives before taking it home.

It Really Works

Whether you’re a believer in the power of the stars or not, the reality of what animals experience in shelters is saddening. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, about 3.1 million dogs enter US animal shelters each year. Some of these dogs never find a home to go to, especially the older ones.

Yet this astrology-inspired initiative has seen a 20% increase in foster applications. That’s many dogs who get to now live outside of cages, matched with humans who share similar personality traits and interests. What’s better than a best friend than a best friend with common interests?

Just A New Way To Explain Opportunity

The impact of these shelters is an inspiring example of how much of a difference we’re all capable of making. Muddy Paws for example, since starting to operate in 2016 in New York has grown to now save about 1,000 lives per year, thanks to its fosters. Now the astrology match feature is a tool to increase that opportunity. The signs are engaging but also educational on the needs of every dog.

“There are so many different types of foster opportunities and astrology became a way to explain that,” explains Muddy Paws, “We have adult dogs, puppies, bond pairs, seniors, pregnant moms, nursing moms, and litters. For the website, we assigned dogs a zodiac sign to showcase them and the opportunities that exist.”

What is life if not a series of opportunities?

Each Sign Has Its Personality

To better understand the matching process think of your own zodiac signs and the way it matches your personalities. For example, Aries is known to be an energetic leader who likes to test boundaries. The dog version will also be high-energy and love going for runs and playing fetch.

On the other hand, Cancers are known to be compassionate and caretaking. A human Cancer might then be better matched with a quiet dog who loves to cuddle and even has its own medical needs.
