1. Mezhgorye

Mezhgorye is a closed town in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. It’s located in the Ural Mountains about 200 kilometers southeast of Ufa.

It is a “closed administrative-territorial formation,” meaning no one can enter the city without proper clearance. Little is known about what goes on there.

2. Woomera Prohibited Area

The RAAF Woomera Test Range, Also known as the Woomera Prohibited Zone, is a weapons testing range operated by the Royal Australian Air Force Aerospace Operational Support Group.

The nearby historic precinct town attracts many tourists every year to view local attractions like Missile Park and the History Museum, but no one is allowed into the testing range itself.

The range was set up originally by the British to counter German rocket technology, but the United Kingdom was too densely populated to conduct the tests there.

3. Jiangsu National Security Education Museum

This new Chinese spy museum exhibits guns disguised as lipstick, hollow coins that conceal documents, and maps hidden in a deck of cards. But you won’t find any foreigners.

A sign outside the Jiangsu National Security Education Museum states that only Chinese citizens are allowed inside. The nation wants to keep its cloak and dagger methods secret, no matter how old they might be.

“We don’t want such sensitive spy information to be exposed to foreigners, so they are not allowed to enter,” a spokeswoman for the museum, who would only give her surname as Qian, told The Associated Press by telephone.

4. Poveglia

Poveglia is a small island located between Venice and Lido in the Venetian Lagoon in Northern Italy. The island had significance in the year 421 A.D. when people from Padua and Esta fled there to escape barbarians.

In the 20th century, the island was used as a quarantine station, and in 1922, the existing buildings were turned into an asylum for the mentally ill needing long term care.

In 1968, the hospital was closed and then abandoned. The island has been featured in Ghost Adventures and Scariest Places on Earth.

5. Area 51

Area 51, otherwise known as Groom lake, is a United States Air Force facility in Nevada. It is a remote detachment of Edwards Air Force Base.

The information given by the government about Area 51 has been minimal, which has left many people to speculate wildly about what goes on there.

Some allege that they’ve seen UFOs zipping around the base. Others who have had access to the base say that aliens are being held there.

The government claims that it’s a secret location for the development of top secret technologies, but the information given is so vague that your guess is as good as mine

6. Svalbard Global Seed Vault

The Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a huge, secure seed bank on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen near Longyearbyen. It sits about 1,3000 kilometers from the north pole.

The Norwegian government spent some $45 million US dollars themselves constructing the seed vault that stores over 10,000 seed samples of 2,000 cultivars for 300 different plant species.

The vault exists as insurance against the loss of seeds in other genebanks during large-scale global crises. It will help protect against loss of biodiversity.

As amazing as it would be to see inside of such an incredible vault, regular joes just aren’t allowed.
