Life is full of mysteries which makes for a history full of plot holes, inconsistencies, and unresolved cases. For as long as mankind has lived, its actions haven’t always made sense or been rational, nor has nature been predictable. That combination means that even the most skilled detectives, who spent their whole lives searching for answers came and left without any.
Now we’re left with these unsolved historical mysteries that the world has just deemed to be lost causes. Here are some of the most famous ones.

The Tamám Shud case, also known as the Mystery of the Somerton Man is one of Australia’s most mysterious unsolved cases. It’s the story of a man who was randomly found dead on a park bench on a cold December night in 1848. What’s strange about it is that no one could uncover the cause of death. Although the blood was found in his stomach, usually a sign of poison, all tests showed no injures or unnatural causes. It gets worse.
While some assume the man had died voluntarily, investigators found a piece of paper that read “Tamám Shud” which in Persian means “it is finished.” These words were ripped from the final page of a 12th-century poetry book where two phone numbers and a code were also written. Yet, not even the greatest detective could crack the code.
Some think the man was a spy who knew too much and others say he took his own life to heal his broken heart. Yet, no one knows who the man is and his DNA is nowhere to be found in a database.
This tragic story happened on Christmas eve in 1945, a night that is supposed to be joyful and full of the sound of children’s laughter. Yet instead of celebrating, The Sodder family woke up in the middle of the night to a fire taking over their residence. The family had nine children present but the parents were only able to escape with four of them before the fire took over entirely. They tried to call for the rest of the children but heard no answer and weren’t able to go find them themselves.
Since this was a time of war, firefighters didn’t arrive till the next day but found no bodies in the ashes. No one knows where the rest of the children went. Some say the parents were lied to because there was no investigation on how the fire started. They sault it was faulty wiring yet the telephone wires were cut and the tracks were tampered with, which looked like someone had purposely made it impossible for the family to get help. This leads some to believe that the children were actually kidnapped and that the fire was no accident.
Isabella Stewart Gardner was an art collector who carefully chose over 7500 paintings, sculptures, furniture, textiles, silver, ceramics, 1500 rare books, and 7000 archival objects-from all over ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, Renaissance Italy, Asia, the Islamic world and 19th-century France and America. The museum by her name now houses them.
However, in 1990, two robbers managed to pass off as police officers and somehow were able to steal 13 paintings undetected. It’s unclear what they had the time to do before anyone suspected them of strange activity. Yet the thieves walked away with half a billion dollars worth of art, making this the biggest theft in art history. The paintings were never again found.
Without going into gory details, Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer who haunted his victims in the largely impoverished areas of London in 1888. Although some tried to claim his identity, no one actually knows who he was or how many victims he actually had. Only five victims have actually been attributed to him but because the crime rate was so high at the time, no one knows which kill belonged to which killer at the time.
Let’s just that many have tried to unravel his identity. In fact, more than 2,000 people were interviewed, “upwards of 300” people were investigated, and 80 people were detained. Unfortunately, many of these reports were destroyed in the second world war, and the identity remains a mystery.
Anne Frank’s story is perhaps one of the most well-known individual stories of the Holocaust, thanks to the diary she kept. Unfortunately, while her diary survived, Ann Frank didn’t despite only being 16 years of age. She spent 761 days hiding in the Secret Annex from The Nazis and yet managed to give each of her days a little meaning. The family was somehow found by the Gestapo and sent to concentration camps.
So how did anyone find her hiding spot? They say that the Gestapo was anonymously tipped, but the identity of the person who did it was never confirmed despite later investigations. However, historians say that it maybe she was found by accident.
Albert Einstein is known as a genius German physicist who is best known for developing the theory of relativity, but also for his important contributions to the development of the theory of quantum mechanics. He lived a long and fulfilling life until his time came on April 18, 1955. He died of natural causes.
You would think that a man of his caliber would have a lot to say on his death bed and it turns out that he did. The nurse that cared for him heard him mutter something in his very last moments except it was in German, and she didn’t understand the language. Since then, no one has been able to find out what Einstein’s last words were. For all we know he might have wanted to leave us with his greatest discovery yet, but we’ll never know.
