A child who faced a traumatic accident is finally seeing some relief in the form of being able to hug her family again.
Gamai is a four-year-old girl from Guinea who, when she was only one, managed to pull a pot of boiling water over herself as she was learning to walk.
She and her family were unable to access proper treatment for her when the wounds were still fresh, so she had grown up so far with severely contracted hands and arms, as well as her skin sporting heavy scarring from the incident.
Her movements were drastically limited as a result, her tightened, scarred skin creating a very small range of motion. She had lived this way for years until recently, when a charity came to their aid.
Mercy Ships is an international health charity who recently sent a boat-top hospital to Guinea, volunteer doctors and surgeons on board to help serve the country's various communities and bring aid to those who needed it.
Gamai's mother, Confort, heard of their arrival and journeyed to the ship with her daughter to see if they could help.
Gamai was indeed selected for surgery, which happened aboard the ship. The procedure was a total success, as were her weeks of physical therapy afterward. She was sent home with a brand new life ahead of her.
She was previously unable to bend her arms at all, but now she had a full range of motion. She could play, write, draw, dance, and hug the people she loved, all for the first time in years.
The accident originally took place just after her mother put a pot of water on to boil some rice for their breakfast. Gamai, just learning how to walk, trotted over to her mother and fell, hitting the pot and knocking the water onto herself.
Since then, she had reportedly been treated pretty terribly by some people in her hometown, but she was still met with the smiling faces of her parents and neighbors after she was released from the traveling hospital's care.
On the day they got to bring her home, Gamai's father, Lamine, said, "Today, she is so active because she can move like she couldn't before. It was as if she was in prison, but today, I can say she is free."
