Scary movies are as old as cinema. For some reason, we have always tried to scare ourselves and have been intrigued by dark stories. Maybe it’s because it gives us a sense of relief that things could be worse, or makes us feel more prepared by watching worse case scenarios played out. Maybe we just want to understand where the darkness comes from and how much of it is real.

We’re all watching for some kind of purpose. Yet, some of us can barely even sit through a scary movie, or can’t stop thinking about it once it’s over. So what does it all mean? It’s basically all psychological and it all has to do with your personality. Find out how.

If They Get And Keep Your Attention

If you’re the kind of person that absolutely loves scary movies and are able to completely immerse yourself into the experience without having to close your eyes to hide or scream once, then you have a high capacity for psychological dissociation. Don’t worry this doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with you. It just means that you have an ability to escape this reality and connect with another one on a deep level. You probably have a high attention span and when you give your attention to something or someone, you’re able to give your full undivided attention.

You’re not easily distracted and you tend to have your eye on the prize. This would make you an ideal candidate for instinctive survival as well. For the time that you give to scary movies, just like anything that holds on to your attention, you keep a spiked mental and physical focus. This helps you stay focused, gives you clarity, and keeps your logical thinking even in threatening situations, whether in an argument or escaping a ghost. It forces you to break from your worries and fears to stay on task. This is quite hard to do for most people who get flustered and caught up in situations.

If You Don’t Even Want To Think About Them

If you’re someone who couldn’t even be paid to voluntarily watch a movie, then you have a low capacity for dissociation. When something bad is happening, you have a hard time convincing your brain that it’s not real or that it’s not as bad as it seems. When something scary or uncomfortable is happening around you, you probably shut down and prefer to avoid it. When you feel threatened, and your body has to pick between fight or flight, it feels safer choosing flight.

In relationships, you tend to be non-confrontational. You’re a lover, not a fighter. You’re naturally kind and empathetic and can feel the emotions of others like they were your own. You’re quite forgiving, even when others don’t deserve it. You’re also probably kind of sensitive and wear your heart on your sleeve. However, when you’re overwhelmed, you just wish you could disappear and need to take some time and space to think alone before addressing the problem.

If It’s Your Go-To Genre For Dates

If you find that scary movies give you quite a rush, get your adrenaline pumping, and even turn you on, then you’re not alone. Scary movies naturally increase your heart rate. They’re designed to stimulate you, get you breathing faster, or even hold your breath at times and this affects your blood flow and sexual arousal. There’s a reason that horror movies make such good dates. It’s not just about the cuddling when you’re scared, the neurological circuits that make you jump up and spill popcorn everywhere while sweating with fear overlap with the neurological and bodily circuits that activate when you sweat or shake with sexual arousal.

If scary movies are you go-to on dates, then you’re probably quite the romantic. Your love language is physical touch and you enjoy nothing more than being around those you love. You trust easily and see the best in people. In fact, people gravitate towards you because of your giving nature, positive energy, and the way that they feel seen and loved through your eyes.

If You Imagine Yourself Living In Them

When you watch horror movies does your mind wander trying to figure out what you would have done in that situation? Do you spend time thinking about what your life would be like if you were faced with a scary movie-like apocalyptic situation? Maybe you even have a plan “just in case.” You might even try to think of what it would be like t be the evil character, what you would think feel, and what would be your motive. This doesn’t mean you have the capacity to do horrible things.

Horror movies are a safe outlet to experience the “shadow side” of human nature. We often try to repress or hide it out of fear, when we all have a bit of darkness within us. Scary movies are a socially acceptable way of exploring the sides of ourselves that are “taboo.”

If this describes you then you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like to feel limited and constrained by society’s rules. You like to think outside of the box and have your own unique style. You love travel and adventure, and any kind of lifestyle that allows you to break out of the 9-5 cubicle mundane routine.

If They Actually Scare You

If scary movies actually scare you, or even trigger you, that’s okay too. Scary movies can expose you to actual trauma that can affect the way you experience the movie. If you’ve gone through a situation that made you feel vulnerable or unsafe, then being exposed to fearful stimuli can become overstumliating and bring you back to a bad place.

Keep in mind, that those with extremely high levels of dissociation, as in higher than the one previously described actually share this kind of personality too. They become so immersed in the movie experience that they can’t sleep for days after because they can’t stop thinking about it.

You probably have a guarded personality. You keep your walls up and only let in a select few that earn your trust. You actually have a goofy fun side to you but you can only let it out once you feel comfortable enough. When in relationships, you like to take things slow and you sometimes overthink them, to the point of sabotaging them. But, when you finally let a person in, they get to know your fun quirky side, and you unravel the many layers that make your being.
