The day was just beginning when at 7:30 a.m. on a Sunday, usually used as a day of rest, paramedics responded to a call of an unresponsive woman at her home. The woman was just 20 years old but was unconscious.

Her parents felt like something was wrong, but the last thing they could fathom was that this would be the morning that they say goodbye to their little girl. When they made the emergency call, they were hoping to be able to save their daughter before it was too late.

As described in the reports, when the paramedics arrived to the scene of the call, they found a 20-year-old woman, who was not breathing. However, they were still required to do everything in their power to see if they could revive the young woman. It was not looking good and the woman's body was not responsive.

"The paramedics performed CPR and other life-reviving methods for 30 minutes," Chief Menifee said. “Given medical readings and the condition of the patient, it was determined at that time that she did not have signs of life.”

The woman's mother, Erica Lattimore was present during the whole ordeal praying that the emergency responders would be able to save her daughter. She didn't want to lose hope and give up. So when they told her that her daughter was dead, she didn't want to believe them

She explains in an interview: "They said, 'Ma’am, she’s gone,’" so she responded: "I told them, ‘Are you absolutely 100 percent sure that she’s gone?’ They said, ‘Yes, ma’am, she’s gone.’” At this point, the mother's heart broke, believing that her daughter was really gone, just like that.

The woman was declared dead and delivered to a funeral home right away in a body bag. It seemed like she really was gone till a funeral home worker started preparing to embalm her body.

The employee discovered that she was alive, breathing with her eyes open. Knowing better than to believe in ghosts, the worker called the family back. At this point, Ms. Beauchamp had spent more than two hours in a body bag. She was then sent to the hospital where she could receive adequate treatment.

The family had already endured a difficult life and Ms. Beauchamp had struggled her whole upbringing as she was born with cerebral palsy.

"She requires constant care since birth," adds the family's lawyer. “I believe her relative fragile condition contributed to the false belief by the authorities” that she had died. The last thing they need was to have to falsely grieve their daughter based on a misdiagnosis by professionals.

The departments questioned all argued that they followed protocols. The fire department claimed that an emergency department physician had pronounced Ms. Beauchamp dead based on medical information that emergency responders provided by phone from the scene.

Ms. Beauchamp's godmother, a registered nurse, was also at the scene when emergency medical workers arrived and told them that she believed Ms. Beauchamp still had a pulse and was breathing. This unleashed an investigation.

It was revealed Ms. Beauchamp was never taken to the medical examiner's office after she was pronounced dead. This is part of the first responders' routine when a patient dies from natural causes.

The investigation found that: "there’s no immediate evidence of foul play that can be found by the first responders, generally a lot of this is done by phone from a medical examiner’s perspective."

One of the greatest pains in the world is the loss of a child. A child who should not die before their parent and get a chance at living their own full life. It's a pain that we wish on no one. It is understandable how upsetting it would be for Ms. Beauchamp's mother to think she lost her own flesh and blood: "Somebody pronounced my child dead, and she's not even dead," she said.

The funeral home issues their own statement and confirmed to The New York Times that they found the woman breathing and called EMS. They added: “Our thoughts and prayers are with this young woman and her family.”

He added, “Our hearts are with the family right now with this."
