From haunted houses to ghost stories, a great scary movie is one that you will remember in the long run. The movies that make us jump, scream, and keep us up at night afraid of the dark are the proof of great acting and writing.
What makes a horror story even scarier is when it's not totally make-belief. We bet you had no clue this movie, like a lot of horror movies, was based on a true story...

Films about paranormal hauntings and supernatural possessions leave us telling ourselves, "it's only a movie; it's not real." But, these things really happened when it comes to stories like "The Conjuring."
"The Conjuring" is a horror movie set in an 18th-century farmhouse. When a family of seven moves into an abandoned home on Rhode Island, they become terrorized by an evil presence. Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators, are tasked to help save the young daughters and their parents from the demonic entities and possessed dolls in their home.
"The Conjuring" would not be the same without its notable heroes - The Warren duo. While some of these investigators' shenanigans were added to the movie for dramatic effects, like the performed exorcisms, this couple was known and real!
Ed and Lorraine were the most-praised professionals in the U.S. paranormal scene. For 50 years, they were involved in nationwide cases as famous as the Enfield Poltergeist. Lorraine revealed that much of "The Conjuring" plot points happened before her own eyes, and she was a part of the movie's creation.
It may not be a huge surprise that both the investigators and the family members were real-life people, but the true Perron family claims the ghosts also exist. The seven family members lived in the infamous 14-room Estate for 10 years, where they shared a home with creepy inhabitants because they could not afford to leave.
The eldest daughter of the five children revealed that the spirits came with a nasty smell, usually beginning their hauntings around 5 in the morning. The family shared that the ghosts were competitive, territorial, and very, very real.
The Perron family was thrilled to move into the infamous mansion in January 1971. But when ghostly noises began to appear, their belongings began to go missing, and piles of dirt formed by themselves on the floor, they knew they weren't living in it alone.
Carolyn, the mother of the five daughters, was truly possessed in the real-life home. The daughters saw their mother curled in an inhumane shape speaking an unknown language out loud. The children claim to have seen multiple ghosts, including the woman with the bent neck. They explain: "the things that went on there were just so incredibly frightening."
If you're a fan of "The Conjuring" movies, you're probably eager to learn about the story behind Bathsheba. One of the creepiest yet coolest characters in the film. Bathsheba was also not fully fictional.
Bathsheba lived next door to the property occupied by the Perron family in real life. Born in 1812 and died in 1885 on Rhode Island, many rumors circulated about the demonic women even prior to the release of the movie. We have her real backstory for you!
During her time alive in the 19th century, Bathsheba had a haunted reputation in the area of Rhode Island. Known to be a murderer of children, and a devoted follower of Satan, the legend of this witch surpasses the fiction of the film.
Her story begins when she was babysitting a young boy who died on her watch, his skull being damaged with evidence of a dangerous object. Despite her not being charged for the incident, she further proved herself as a murderess when her husband found her stabbing her infant son while speaking evil prayers aloud.
So, if these characters and events in the movie took place in real life, what was fake? While the Warrens did investigate the case of the Perron family, they were not Catholic Priests, so they could not perform any exorcisms on the site like in the film. The extremity of the ghosts' appearances, forms, and invasiveness was also wildly exaggerated.
To this day, the Rhode Island farmhouse is still standing. Trespassers and crazed fans visit the location daily, where the evil spirits of these well-known entities most likely still reside.
Andrea Perron, the most out-spoken of the family, has published various books that tell the tale of what her family saw and experienced. In both volumes of "House of Darkness House of Light: The True Story", and "In A Flicker", Perron turns "The Conjuring" into a non-fiction memoir.
The family is not shocked when people label them as liars: "People are free to believe whatever they want to believe. But I know what we experienced."
Horror movies scare us to death, but that's what makes them so fun. Even when we cover our eyes to the sight of possessed people and murderous talking dolls, the thrill of a haunting tale is one we can't resist.
"The Conjuring" isn't the only ghost story based on real-life events. You never know what's truly lurking in the dark, so sleep with one eye open ...
