“My groovy grandma. A trailblazer in her time as a women’s rights activist.”

Isn’t ironic how we live in a culture that’s always out with the old and in with the new, except what’s new isn’t actually new but a recycled version of the past? This whole outfit would very much be in style with the younger generation today.

This goes to show how we do value the life of the past, including its expression in our fashion and trends. The only difference is that now we also have the advantage of learning from the past and only keeping the parts that actually serve our needs and help us grow and move forward.

An Easygoing World

“My girlfriend’s grandfather, meeting the Queen”

The pandemic has really changed the world and the ways that we interact with each other. There was a time when we never had to worry if we were over the restricted number of indoor gatherings or whether we forgot our mask in the car and wouldn’t be allowed in a store.

Despite taking these measures for our own safety, it has changed our social interactions and established a new norm. Perhaps one day we’ll be able to go back to the freedom of seeing whoever, whenever, wherever without worries.

Take a quick zodiac reading here to find out what your universe has to say about you right now.

The Purpose Of Photos

“My mom and her stepmother posing by this man because of his ‘wild’ shirt” [1986~]

If you think about it, the whole reason we now pose for photos has changed. We used to take a picture and not be able to even see what it looked like until we got it developed. Then it would go in a photo album that would be passed on from generation to generation.
Today we tend to take multiple takes after many poses to see which one looks best and is good enough to post on our social media page for everyone to see. It has often become less about capturing a memory and freezing a moment in time, and more about maintaining a certain appearance.

“My dad, Big Bear Lake California in 1960 with a 1958 Hillman Minx”

It seems like people back in the day didn’t need a lot to be happy. It didn’t matter if they had the latest iPhone version and if their car had a touch screen as long as it played music somehow. Kids didn’t have technological gadgets and video games to keep them locked inside for hours.

Instead, they went outside and used their imagination to create their own fun, for free. Even adults were able to socialize and interact despite not having instant text messages available to reach each other. They made it work with what they had, and without the pressure of needing to constantly be available.

College Was Just A Stepping Stone

“My dad (left) at his college graduation” [1970s]

There was a time when going to college was an affordable option and a time of freedom and excitement. Now college has become a social expectation to find a good job despite leaving students in debt for the rest of their lives. The cost of living has significantly increased since the 70s. It’s almost impossible for young adults to afford to buy homes, let alone start a family and pay off their debts.

To put in numbers tuition and fees at private institutions jumped by 2,107%, from $1,706 in 1970, to $37,650 in 2020. Between 1970 and 2020, the dollar had an average inflation rate of 3.87% annually, resulting in a cumulative price increase of about 567% in the last 50 years.

Our Parents Were once Young And Cool, And So Were We

“My mom before driving to Lilith Fair” [1997]
