In life, we face many battles and challenges that leave us in emotional turmoil. When we undergo break-ups, health problems, or financial struggles, we are sometimes left in shattered pieces that require the support of friends or family to pick up.

Some people digest the struggles of others more intensely than normal, and the people that offer us the most support are often referred to as "empaths." The friend that is always a shoulder to cry on or the mother that always goes out of her way to come to the rescue is probably the empath in your life.

What's An "Empath"?

An empath is a person who takes on the emotional energy of their loved ones, carrying the weight of the problems of others and bearing the need to fix them. Therapist Kristen Routh explains the phenomenon as follows: "Empaths are typically very cued into non-verbal communication, including posture, body language, and facial expression. They can also experience sudden, overwhelming emotions when around others."

At some point, holding on to the issues of others will become an unhealthy way of life for an empath. This is how they will know that it's time to let someone go.

It's the nature of an empath to recognize and absorb the energy of the people they interact with. When someone in an empath's household is stressed, they will feel it. When an empath's partner is upset, it's contagious to their own emotional state.

An empath will start to know that someone cannot stay in their lives when they begin to feel overly energetically drained. Every person has their own stressors and struggles in life, so it's impossible to be responsible for someone else's energy. When an empath feels that someone close to them is radiating only negativity at all times, it will wear them down.

Human beings are not made up of only a physical body. An empath knows that we all have a soul inside of us to take care of as well. An empath has a big heart, so they feel the pains of loss, grief, and suffering more than the average person.

Too much negativity on the heart and the brain can cause a decline in one's physical and mental well-being. An empath will know it's time to part ways with someone when their desire to nourish their soul gets put on the back-burner for someone else. It's essential to protect our spiritual health first!

Empaths live with people-pleasing tendencies, and they always feel that it's their responsibility to make sure everyone's happy and taken care of. While it's a common habit for empath's to offer guidance, suggestions, and alternative perspectives, the truth is that not everyone wants to get better.

When an empath realizes that someone enjoys living underneath a cloud of sadness, they will realize there is nothing they can do to change that. At some point, an empath will stop trying to lend a helping hand to someone who keeps shoving it away.

Crossing Boundaries

It's important that empaths set boundaries with the people in their lives. In order to maintain a healthy relationship with family, friends, and partners, empaths often find that communicating limits to emotional labor is crucial.

An empath will know that it's time to cut ties with an individual when they feel that they're being taken advantage of. When someone is consistently depending on a friend for emotional support or bringing up triggering topics to deal with, an empath will notice that someone is constantly crossing the line.

By definition, an empath is a person who feels empathy for others more intensely than everyone else. This means that they are highly in tune with the way someone feels, including their own emotions. But no matter how much you warn them, the moment they finally let go is the moment they feel it themselves.

This moment hit them like a brick when it finally comes. It's usually the moment they feel completely drained out and suffocating and desperately need a way out. An empath will know it's time to walk away from a relationship when they feel that their increasingly declining vibrational frequencies have become too affected by a person.

The average brain feels empathy when they notice someone struggling, but what differentiates an empath is the reaction they have to the situation. While a regular person will understand how someone is feeling, an empath feels this painful energy alongside them. To be an empath is both a blessing and a curse, so you can't blame them when it's time to walk away.

You cannot pour from an empty glass, so no matter how hard it might be, at some point, a person will realize they have nothing left to offer. That's the moment they finally get out, but is the damage already done at that point?
