Up until now, flags have been used to represent what are, for all intents and purposes, the spaces inside of imaginary borders. But what happens when multiple countries come together to work on behalf of the entire planet? That’s the quandary that some are facing when, in 2030, humanity will plant its feet on Mars for the first time.
What flag will they stick in the ground? This is one idea for the official flag of planet Earth:
This design by Oskar Pernefeldt was designed for his graduate project at Beckman’s College of Design in Stockholm. The flower formed by the seven rings you see on the flag symbolizes life on Earth.
“The rings are linked to each other, which represents how everything on our planet, directly or indirectly, are linked,” Pernefeldt said in an entry on his website.
The blue of the flag represents our planet’s water, a key component of life.
“The flower’s outer rings form a circle which could be seen as a symbol of Earth as a planet and the blue surface could represent the universe.” writes Pernedeldt.
