Have you heard the saying that the eyes are the windows to the soul? It turns out that statement might have more truth to it than simply finding someone's eyes especially beautiful or expressive.
A number of studies have shown that a lot can be discerned about a person simply by watching their pupils. From small things such as differing opinions, to major crisis moments like a head injury, the pupil is a powerful tool for gathering all sorts of information.
By learning about what your pupils are broadcasting to the world, you can then tell how others are thinking, improving your intuitive skills.

It's capable of sending full thoughts and messages to those around us without us needing to utter a word.
Body language manifests in many areas of the body, with even the most subtle of movements signaling to others what we're truly thinking. One way we do this without even even trying is through the size of our pupils.
The way our eyes dilate and constrict holds more secret meanings than you might be aware of. Here are just some of the messages you might be broadcasting when someone looks into your eyes.
Dilated pupils can be a sign that someone's currently deep in thought. In a 1964 study, researchers Eckhard Hess and James Polt conducted an experiment wherein they gave participants increasingly more difficult tasks to complete and watched the size of their pupils.
The harder the work, the more their pupils grew, meaning dilated pupils are a sign of concentration and intense focus.
Along that same vein, pupils can indicate that your brain is overloaded, this time by constricting.
Another study showed that when people are made to process information at 75-100% of their standard capacity, their pupils dilated. When made to process anything more than that, pumping in more info than they're full capable of handling at once, their pupils would instead constrict.
Poock even suggested a practical use for this info, writing, "Pupil diameter may be a parameter which would identify points in time where mental overload occurs in a worker's job, and therefore identify areas of the job which should be redesigned if one wished to reduce mental overload."
That's right, the movement of your pupils can indicate whether or not you've suffered brain damage.
That's why you see doctors and paramedics shining lights in their patients' eyes. They follow an acronym called PERRL, the Pupils should be Equal, Round, and Reactive to Light.
When someone suffers hits their head, checking if their pupils are uneven or not reacting to light is a quick, early indicator about the severity of their injury.
Pupil dilation can also indicate interest.
This could be in a conversation, when reading a book, or watching a movie. Among the other signs of active listening or engaged interest, your pupils will grow in size when interacting with something you're interested in.
Note that this doesn't always mean you like what you're seeing, reading, or hearing, just that your brain is compelled to see more.
Pupil constriction can indicate disgust and repulsion to something someone is engaging with.
However, you have to get through dilation first. Pupil dilation can be an indicator of shock, but if they quickly constrict afterwards, it's a clear sign of aversion to what's being shown. The theory is that your pupils get smaller to try and take in less of what it's seeing, avoiding whatever it is that's troubling your brain so much.
If someone happens to pull out a photo of a certain politician in front of you, they may be able to pick up on your political opinions based on your pupil's reaction.
A 1969 study showed that upon viewing politicians whose opinions someone agrees with, their pupils will dilate, while their pupils will constrict when seeing a politician whom they don't care for.
Pupil dilation can also indicate pain.
A 1999 study saw that people's pupils can dilate by approximately 0.2mm when experiencing low amounts of pain, with the assumption being that they can grow further if the pain is more severe.
Oftentimes there are other indicators that someone might be in great pain, but if all else fails, that is a way to check.
This one is less about pupils, but still about the eyes, as the appearance of your iris can provide tells about your personality.
If someone has lines that appear move away from the pupil towards the outer edge of the iris, known as 'crypts', it suggests that they're a warm, gentle person. If someone as furrows, or lighter-colored rings that appear to go all the way around the iris (or close to), they're more impulsive.
This is caused by something called the Pax6 gene, which also affects the part of the brain associated with approach-related behaviors.
Something as minute as pupil dilation or constriction can be hard to notice, but given how much of a tell they are for so many behaviors, it might not be a bad idea to start paying more attention to the eyes of those around you.
Combining this knowledge with other cues, such as gut instinct or the crossing of one's arms, and you can become an expert at reading people, even people you're meeting for the first time.
