Staying Positive

It can be hard sometimes to stomach the cruelty and negativity that we see every day in our world. Turn on the news and you’ll hear about bombs killing the innocent.

Go outside and you’ll see homeless people hungry on the streets. Open the newspaper and you’ll hear about violence in your community. So what can you do to be a beacon of light in a negative world?

1. Surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you.

Make sure your friends are people who bring out the absolute best in you, not people who drag you down. You have to vibrate at a higher frequency, and that won’t happen if you’re with people who keep you feeling bummed.

2. Limit exposure to negative media.

It’s a blessing and a curse, the media is. It’s important because it helps you keep cued into what’s happening in this world, but you can also limit the negativity you see. Gory movies, shows about murder, and violent video games are seriously negative things you should avoid.

3. Create new, positive habits.

Positive change in the world starts with you. If you have a temper, learn to temper your temper. If you do bad things, try to replace them with better things. Don’t work to break old habits, but make new, better habits.

4. Laugh more often.

It feels good and it’s absolutely infectious.

5. Give a hug once in a while.

Studies have shown just how important hugs can be for this world. Not only do they feel good, but they’re good for your immune system as well.

“We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression and anxiety,” said Sheldon Cohen, professor of Psychology at CMU’s Dietrich College of Humanities And Social Sciences.

“We tested whether perceptions of social support are equally effective in protecting us from stress-induced susceptibility to infection and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feelings of support and themselves protect a person against infection.”

6. Disconnect from time to time.

Be sure to take a little time and disconnect. Shut down and go for a long bike ride. Take off to the beach for the weekend. Spend a week backpacking through the forest. Just get out of it all once in a while. Let nature recharge your batteries.

7. Take action.

The final step here is to take action and begin improving the lives of people around you. If people live good lives, the allure of living in a negative way is suddenly gone. And remember, everyone does better when everyone does better.
