Today, there are 7,102 known languages of which only about 23 remain popular enough to be considered a primary human language. Those 23 languages are the native tongue for more than 4.1 billion people. This stellar infographic helps break down those 23 languages even further. Check it out:

The most widely used language on the planet is Chinese, which has a variety of dialects like Cantonese, Min Dong, Gan, Hakka and Min Bei. English, French and Spanish are also among the most widespread languages due to European colonialism of the 17th through 20th centuries.

Even though Chinese is the most widely used language, English remains the number one language with 1.5 billion learners. French comes in second. Chinese is third.
