It's nice to indulge in a little treat every once and a while. A new outfit, a fun outing, or maybe just a simple pizza from your favorite local pizza shop will do the trick.

A Hell-Raising Program

A New Zealand pizza shop has introduced a unique (and somewhat controversial) payment plan for those who'd rather hang onto their money now and worry about paying later. Like much, much later.

Hell Pizza announced their new program titled 'AfterLife Pay,' claiming that they're turning up the "heat" on other buy now, pay later (BNPL) systems that have grown in popularity online over the past few years—ones that Hell PIzza says are preying on low-income citizens who struggle to afford the necessities.

A Step Too Far

"We're seeing a growing number of people using the schemes to buy essential items like food, and we think it's taking it a step too far when you've got quick service restaurants like ours being asked to offer BNPL for what is considered a treat - especially when you consider people are falling behind in their payments and 10.5 percent of loans in NZ are in arrears," wrote Hell Pizza CEO Benn Cumming in a statement.

He said that they came up with AfterLife Pay when a BNPL company approached them, wanting them to offer the service to their customers.

So, What Is It?

With AfterLife Pay, you owe no money to Hell Pizza upfront. Instead, you'll pay them off when you're dead.

Yes, that's right. You sign a contract that states that you'll pay the company back for the pizza you just bought once you've "perished from this Earth." The money will be removed from your estate and given to Hell Pizza.

Of course, the contract and marketing behind this decision are all very tongue-in-cheek, but it is legally binding too!

Worry About It Later

They plan to run it as a trial first, and any New Zealand or Australia resident over the age of 18 will be eligible to apply.

True to their branding, only 666 people from each country will be selected to sign their very own AfterLife Pay contract.

They'll sign the document online for the total of whatever their order is, which will then be filed away for them to issue with their full will and testament after their passing.

A Fair Trade?

In the statement, Cumming called pizza one of life's simple joys, explaining that AfterLife Pay allows their customers to get a pizza fix without needing to worry about money. Right now, anyway.

"AfterLife Pay is a light-hearted campaign that reinforces Hell's stance on buy now pay later schemes - you can have your pizza and eat it too without any pesky late fees or penalties," he wrote.

Would you apply? It sounds like a pretty good deal. Well...maybe not for your loved ones who will have to pay $40 to a pizza shop down the line, but if it means pizza now, then sign me up!
