77 Years Of Marriage

“My 96-Year-Old Grandma, With My 100-Year-Old Grandpa, Hours Before Her Death. 77 Years Of Marriage.”

When you first get married, the last thing you think about is your final day together. You get excited that now you no longer have to go through life alone, as for better or for worse, you’ve got a partner that you can lean on and team up with to get through anything.

In what feels like the blink of an eye, you grow old together. You experience the world together and your form an unbreakable bond that has stood the test of time. But, nothing in life lasts forever. Not even the strongest love and one day it’s all bound to come to an end, even if it’s just from the natural cycle of life. Watching the person you love die, or knowing that you’re leaving the person you love and have spent every single day for decades with behind, is an unbearable thought.

Moments Before Becoming A Hero

“The final picture of my cousin Gary, taken on September 11, 2001”

No one could have predicted the severity of the consequences of the events that day. To those on the front line, it was just another day. Their mission was clear and it was to help as many civilians get to safety as possible, even if it meant risking their own lives to do it.

Even though Gary became a hero that day, he likely woke up early that morning, having no idea what fate awaited him. Just like everyone working in that tower, he got up, he got dressed, and went to do his job…except he would never come back.

A Final Goodbye

“My good friend Bear telling his son and daughter goodbye. He died the next evening from pancreatic cancer.”

Knowing when death is coming to knock on our door doesn’t make it any easier, especially when there’s so much we’re not ready to leave behind. Bear’s kids are likely too young to understand that their dad is leaving them forever, so they sit on his hospital bed, talking to him like they would any other day.

They can probably sense that something is wrong but their little innocent minds haven’t yet developed enough to understand death and the grief that comes with it. To them, their dad is sick, but they expect to see him again the next day. It’s heartbreaking that when they go see their dad again, his bed would be empty.

Love Conquers All

This woman was battling Breast Cancer but there was one thing she dreamed of doing while she was still alive. To her marriage wasn’t just about a life commitment, as she knew she had little life left to live, but it was the outmost way that she could show the man that she loved, how much she truly wanted to give whatever she had left only to him.

The couple had a ceremony at a hospital chapel. She was able to live her dreams and even wear a wedding gown. She passed away just 18 hours later. While her husband was made a widow in less than a day, he still got to experience marrying the love of his life, before it was too late.

All It Takes Is A Moment

“My best friend at my wedding. By the time our reception was over, he was considered brain dead. I’m sure you can find out which one he was. He didn’t say a word about feeling weird but when we arrived he got an Uber and rode home. He had a random brain bleed that could not be operated.”

Sometimes death creeps in on us when we least expect it. To everyone, this was a normal day. In fact, it was a day of celebration. Maybe the best man looked a little off, but no one thought much of it, we all have our days. No one expected that the day they were celebrating love and new beginnings would become a memory of loss and the end of a life still young.

Together To The Very End

After 69 years of marriage, this man had to watch his wife take her last breath right in front of him. When you’re in a lifelong marriage it could be unbearable to think of which one of you is going to leave the world first, despite knowing that it would be inevitable.

But when the day actually comes, it can feel like an out-of-body experience to watch the person you shared the better part of your life with, who has become a part of your identity with, that you’ve woken up next to for decades be with you one moment, and then gone the next. At that point, you’re not just losing another person, but a part of yourself is gone with them too.

The Last Supper

“My grandma shows off with her preparations for guests. Exactly 9 Minutes before we called an ambulance.”

The next time a loved one invites you for dinner, or just to talk, embrace the opportunity because you never know when it’s going to be the last. This woman couldn’t have imagined that as she worked hard in the kitchen that day, making all kinds of dishes to impress and host her family, she was in fact making her last supper.

In the picture, she still looks lively and happy. There are no signs that these would be the last minutes that she would experience. At the very least her last moments were shared with her loved ones.

It Can Happen At Any Age

“This is the last photo taken of my older brother as he was leaving for college. He was the victim of a drinking and driving incident. I miss him every day.”

Let this be a cautionary tale that you’re never too young, too healthy, too happy, or too safe from death. It can happen to anyone at any time even if you never think that person can be you. But don’t let that drive you into fear. Rather let it encourage you to make the most of your living experience while you still can. Now that you’re at the end of this article, go tell your loved ones how much they mean to you, go hug everyone in your proximity, go take that trip you’ve been longing for and slow down to actually appreciate your surroundings.

Don’t get too caught up in structure and expectations. Live while you’re alive!
