Disappeared At Just Four Years Old

Sun Zhuo who is now 18-years-old, was once just a little boy enjoying the sun and playing outside under the watch of his mother. His father was napping. It seemed like just an ordinary day. However, this was the day all of their lives would change forever. All of the sudden, Sun’s mother couldn’t see him anymore. She looked and she looked and the panic started to take over as she couldn’t find anywhere.

Sun’s mother woke up his husband and the two searched up and down the street but with no luck. Upon checking the security camera, they realized that their son had been kidnapped.

The Search Begins

The parents found out that a random man had approached their son, and lured him away using a toy. The man had taken out the toy and called the young boy over. The boy went over to play with the toy and was taken away. The parents were in shock. That night his father screamed his son’s name all over the street, hoping he would eventually come out. Except every time he came across an intersection, he didn’t even know which way to go.

For years, the parents searched and searched. They went as far as selling their properties to come up with enough money to keep funding their searches and offer rewards to anyone who had more information about their son.

A Shop Dedicated To Hope

The police were slow to open an investigation so Sun’s parents felt like they had to take matters into their own hands. Sun’s father opened a seemed bun shop in his town and named it “A Shop to Look for my Son.’

He would post photos of his son and his kidnapper all over the signboard, hoping someone passing by would recognize him and give a clue that would bring him closer to finding his son. This was his only hope as the police weren’t helping.

Every Clue Was A Piece Of Hope

Sun’s father explains: “Over the past 14 years, I checked every clue anyone gave me. Sometimes, I would be disappointed if I didn’t get a phone call for a few days. I was happy even when liars called me, saying they would exchange clues for the reward. At least, that gave me a glimmer of hope.”

The parents even decided to put up a 100,00 Yuan reword (about $13,000) which was a large amount of money in the early 2000s, but even that wasn’t enough. Yet he couldn’t put a price on finding his son. He was ready to use his very last penny and to even start borrowing from others. The community came together and helped him raise thousands of dollars more. They would often gather around the shop to discuss the case.

The Impossible Happened

Then the impossible happened and fourteen years later, they found their son. A DNA test even confirmed that he was in fact the same little boy that once vanished from his own home.

His father recalls the moment he knew they would be reunited: “I am so happy that I finally found my son. I’ve been to so many places looking for him over the past 14 years. I couldn’t sleep well and be always worried about him. Before the reunion ceremony, I could only remember him as a 4-year-old”.

The Family Was Reunited

After 14 years and 57 days, the four-year-old returned as an 18year old young adult. He left a child and came back taller than his mother. However, by then he had lived a whole other life, not being aware that his parents were searching for him. He had a new personality, his own interests, skills, and habits. “He brought us local specialties from where he lives now. He is the Sun Zhuo that all of us have looked for all these years, ” says his father.

The Suspect Has Since Been Arrested

Luckily, new technology has made it easier to identify and locate Sun’s kidnapper from all those years. The police used facial recognition technology to help them identify a suspect, surnamed Wu, who is now being in their custody.

After all those years, the family finally got the answers that kept them up for fourteen years. It turns out that the kidnapper used Sun for money. He allegedly sold the then four-year-old to a couple. Luckily, the couple genuinely wanted to adopt a young boy and were good to him. They gave him a nice life, raised him, and treated him well. They didn’t face any charges.

A Movie Is Being Made About The Family

Sun’s disappearance and his father’s search efforts inspired a 2014 Chinese movie, named “Dearest” directed by Peter Chan, starring Zhao Wei. The whole country was incredibly moved by their story and wanted to raise awareness about child abduction and the issues surrounding it.

One of the topics of discussion it brought up is China’s old one-child policy. Although that policy is no longer in place it did have an effect on many children’s lives and fate. The boys were often kept over the girls. Girls were then often put up for adoption. However, the boys were often trafficked and sold for large amounts of money. This could have been the motive behind sun’s kidnapping at the time. However, many parents adopting had no idea the children were being trafficked.

A Surprising Twist

In a twist ending, the young man chose not to return to live with his biological family. Instead, he wanted to stay with the biological family that had raised him as he had grown attached to them and had no idea that they weren’t his real parents all along. He loved them and still considered them to be his family.
