If you’re anything like me, you love cats! So when I learned that today is National Cat Day, you could say I got a little bit excited.

But it’s not just about appreciating our feline companions, it’s about appreciating felines that have no companions.

National Cat Day celebrates our kitties, but raises awareness for cats that have yet to be adopted.

Right now across the United States, there are 3.4 million cats waiting to find loving, permanent homes. Sadly, only about 1.3 million actually will.

That’s why it’s important that today, on National Cat Day, if you’ve been considering getting a feline companion, today might just be the day.

If you’d like to search for your local animal, visit The Shelter Project’s Website to find the closest animal shelter to you.

If you love cats but can’t commit to one long term, you can also offer to foster cats and kittens through your local animal shelter.

This helps reduce the number of animals that may need to be euthanized and helps match cats with wonderful homes.

Okay, so National Cat Day obviously isn’t all seriousness. There’s a fun side too. Here are some of our favorite felines from Instagram. Enjoy!

1. Houdini The Bengal

Houdini, as his name states, is a bengal! He has a gorgeous leopard coat. However, it can’t be seen as clear in this photo because he currently lives in Alaska, and in Alaska it’s cold out!

He loves going on long walks with his parents throughout the Alaskan wilderness, but his sweater is essential.

Another baby bengal has recently moved in with Houdini, but she doesn’t have a name yet! Follow him on Instagram to find out what they name her!

2. Maisey the Scottish Fold

3. Oskar the blind cat

Oskar the blind cat isn’t some meme, asserts Mick Szydlowski, his cat dad. Oskar is also an inspiration to those everywhere who suffer from blindness, human and cat alike.

Mick started Oskar’s instagram feed to show “what it was like living with a cat with sepcial needs.”

“I am very consistent with reading the comments that people make on Instagram and Facebook. If someone has a question about adopting a disabled cat, I want to help,” Szydlowski says.

4. Princess Cheeto

Princess Cheeto is just your average cat, but Hugo Martinez is not your average cat dad. He’s an artist whose goal is to simply make people happy.

“I used to be obsessed with Grumpy Cat and other cats,” Martinez says. “I remember how happy these cats would make me — they would totally turn around my day.”

Princess Cheeto is the perfect subject for his photographs. “She’ll stay and she’ll pose,” he says.

5. Lil BUB

Mike Bridavsky, from the moment he saw Lil BUB, it was love.

“People kept giving up on her because it was obvious that she needed special care,” Bridavsky recalls. Lil BUB has a degenerative bone condition called osteopetrosis.

“She’s the only cat in recorded history born with it,” Bridavsky says. “I fell in love with her as soon as I saw her. I couldn’t believe she was real.”

6. Shrampton

Shrampton is quite possibly the classiest cat we’ve ever seen. His mom, Leilani Shimoda, is a fashion designer who knows what to look for in cat fashion.

Shimoda posts to Shrampton’s Instagram account because she says it makes people happy.

“Some people comment and say ‘I was having the worst day, this helped,’ or they tag each other and say ‘This is us! This is me! This will be us tomorrow.’ I love that.”

And Shrampton handles it all pretty well. He poses perfectly for each of the images.

7. Nala

Nala the cat is the perfect rescue cat story. Her kitty mom, Pookie Methachittiphan, picked her up from a shelter and hasn’t looked back. Spreading the word about shelter animals is important to her, which is why she created Nala’s Instagram page.

Over time, the Instagram account became a full time job, which works for her. “I get to be with my pets and spread the word about adoption,” she says.
