Tyeesha Mobley was at a gas station near her Bronx apartment with her two young boys when she caught the older of the two, the 9-year-old, taking $10 out of her purse. At the time, she thought that this would be a good chance to teach them a lesson, so she called the police and asked them to help her teach the boy about the consequences of stealing.

When the police arrived, the situation escalated out of control quickly. Three of the four officers who arrived realized that no serious offense had occurred and that it was a lighthearted call.

“They started asking Tyleke what did he take,” said Mobley. “He told them. And about three officers was joking around with him, telling him, ‘You can’t be stealing, you’ll wind up going in the police car.’”

The fourth officer, however, had a different idea. He started yelling at the small family.

“You black bitches don’t know how to take care of your kids,” said the officer. “Why are you wasting our time? We aren’t here to raise your kid. Why don’t you take your fucking kid and leave?”

Clearly alarmed, Mobley followed his order and tried to leave. But before she could, she was placed under arrest. Her children were terrified and cried for him to stop. One of the other officers attempted to intervene, but he replied “Black bitches like that. This is how I treat them.”

After her arrest, Mobley was taken to the hospital for bruises sustained when the fourth officer kicked her during the arrest. She managed to avoid child endangerment charges, interestingly enough since the cop was the only one endangering anyone. Mobley’s kids were placed in foster care for four month where they reportedly received poor care.

The family is now reunited, but the lesson about not stealing turned into another one for the boys: if you’re a “black bitch,” you can’t trust the NYPD. Mobley is rightfully suing the NYPD.
