5 Differences Between Mature And Immature Relationships

Immature relationships hold an important place in everyone’s lives. The puppy love romances we have in our teens are where we begin to learn about relationships.

But, it can’t remain that way. You can’t be someone in your 20s or 30s who’s still having the same type of relationship you had when you were 15.

If you are, then it’s a sign that you’re not evolving — and life is all about evolution. Everyone deserves a mature relationship, and there’s no time like the present to assess the relationship you have with your partner to find out if it’s a mature one.

I’m not saying you have to act all grown up and adult 24/7. You can still go on roller coasters and chase each other with water guns.

And, by all means, call in “sick” if the beach is calling your name. By mature relationship, I mean mature in the sense of how you handle communication, how you deal with issues that come up as a couple.

Below, I have outlined what I think are the 5 major differences between mature and immature relationships.

1. You don’t want to change your partner

In a mature relationship, changing your partner is something that would never even occur to you. It’s OK to ask that he not throw his dirty socks in the corner and that she not use your razor.

But, wanting to change or “fix” who someone is as a person should not be your goal. Maybe he or she isn’t perfect, but he or she shouldn’t have to be.

2. Jealousy is never an issue

In an adult relationship, the male can have female friends and vice versa without the relationship coming to a screeching halt.

Each partner is secure in the other’s commitment and does not possess an unfounded worry about cheating or dishonesty.

3. You don’t have to be in constant contact

Part of an adult relationship is realizing that each person has his or her own life, separate of one another.

It should be fine with you if he watches football with the guys while you have a spa day with the girls. Being together all the time or constantly texting just isn’t possible, and that is OK.

4. Showing your love is more important than saying it

When in the first stages of a relationship, it’s important that you express how you feel about one another. But, over time, it becomes more important to show your partner how you feel.

Showing your partner you love them in your day-to-day actions rather than literal words definitely indicates a more mature relationship.

5. You’re mentally and physically in sync

This may sound like it’s about sex, but that’s not the case. It’s about him or her becoming an extension of you in a healthy way.

It’s more about knowing a person so well and having developed such a connection that his or her smallest movement can be predicted — or sentences finished.
