Are you a blood donor? Awesome! You deserve a high five. If you’re not, that’s okay, but you should try it at least once. There’s always a need and you can end up saving a life. Swedish authorities think blood donors are so cool that they now send a text to their donors when their donation saves a life. It was developed to encourage donors to donate again in the future.

“We are constantly trying to develop ways to express [donors’] importance,” Karolina Blom Wiberg of the Blodcentralen told The Independent. “We want to give them feedback on their effort, and we find this is a good way to do that.”

Not only that, but they receive a thank you text when they give blood, as well as periodic updates that basically let them know what their blood is up to these days.

“Our challenge is to make the public and especially the blood donators understand just how important their contribution is,” Blom Wiberg said.

“We get a lot of visibility in social media and traditional media thanks to the SMS. But above all we believe it makes our donors come back to us and donate again,” Blom Wiberg added.

This simple pleasantry has proven incredibly effective at retaining blood donors. Many people feel like they’ve made a difference in someone’s life and the world, which they certainly have. Maybe that’s something we should do here in the U.S. too!
