Sometimes, it feels like you just can’t do it anymore. Whether it’s your job, school, or relationship issues, mental fatigue can hit you for a variety of reasons.

Although it’s different than simply being physically tired, the mind controls the body, which means it can have an impact on your physical self as well.

When you’re experiencing stress and a hectic environment, mental fatigue can come on suddenly and relentlessly.

If you think you might be suffering from mental fatigue, take a look at these six signs so that you can be sure.

After you identify the source of your mind’s exhaustion, you should be able to find a cure.

1. You Have a Mental Block

A mental block is when you feel like your brain has literally shut off.

You may have experienced this sign of mental fatigue when you’ve been considering a problem for a continuous and lengthy amount of time.

During a mental block, your brain stops you from going further in order to indicate that it needs a rest.

2. You Feel More Emotional

During a state of mental fatigue, you have less control over your feelings, especially when it comes to emotion.

This can actually make mental fatigue feel a lot like depression in some cases. Any emotion you feel during your mental fatigue will be elevated.

Unfortunately, mental fatigue doesn’t typically bring about feelings of positivity.

3. You Experience Physical Symptoms

Since the mind controls the body, the effects of mental fatigue aren’t limited to just the brain.

When you experience mental fatigue, you might experience physical symptoms like headaches, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, insomnia, and unusual energy levels.

Many of these symptoms overlap with those of depression and anxiety, which isn’t a coincidence.

4. There’s No Downtime

The best way to avoid and cure yourself of mental fatigue is downtime.

If you notice that your life rarely has room for any downtime, it’s probably affecting your mind’s ability to rest.

When was the last time you took a vacation? It could be the thing you need in order to recharge your batteries, so to speak.

5. You Take on Too Much at Once

When you’re mentally tired, you’re probably overwhelmed. People who suffer from mental fatigue have a tendency to take on too much at one time.

Even sensory input counts as mental stimulus, which can cause you stress if you’re already in a busy environment.

Sights, sounds, and smells can all overwhelm the brain if there’s no break in between.

6. Memory Loss

When the brain is tired, it’s no shock that your memory will start to go.

If you notice that you’re starting to forget little things that you’d normally have no issue remembering, it could be a sign that you’re mentally fatigued.

Focusing, remembering, and solving simple problems will all be issues you experience.
