How To Uncover The Roots Of Your Childhood Trauma And Heal

No person's life is completely free from struggle or strife. We all deal with pain, with grief, and we all learn how to deal with it in our own ways, some less savory than others.

For some people though, this pain begins early, stemming from dire experiences in childhood that make a mark on their still-developing minds. These marks are sometimes obvious, sometimes hidden, but they remain nevertheless, impacting that person's life for decades to come.

Though it's one of the darker aspects of our society, there's no reason we should be shying away from the realities of childhood abuse and neglect. It's more common than any of us wish, and it profoundly affects the children who experience it, leaving them with lifelong trauma that can follow them into adulthood.

In fact, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration states that by the age of 16, over two-thirds of children will experience a traumatic event of some kind. This can include instances of violence, the loss of a loved one, big family stressors, or serious illness.

Types of trauma and the psychological effects they leave on a child's brain aren't always visible. While some children will noticeably act up in school, be unable to keep their grades up, or have other behavioral problems, some deal with their trauma internally in a way that adults don't easily pick up on.

Without intervention, counseling, or other forms of help, this trauma can fester, seeping its way into things like social development, self-esteem, and other important areas for a person's mental health.

As such, many of these children who hide their problems away and don't get the help they need grow into adults who still harbor these same issues. Now, to be clear, this doesn't make them bad or wrong. Trying to cope with trauma by yourself for years, decades even, is incredibly difficult. Sometimes it goes on for so long that the person loses sight of what caused these issues in the first place, now believing it's just an inherent fault in their programming as a human being.

This isn't true in the slightest. There's always a reason or an influence that causes someone to behave the way they do, especially if the behavior in question is a clear sign of trauma from the distant past.
