Thinking Outside The Box
In the ongoing hunt for various cures to equally various ailments, there have been some... unique methods people have discovered that they swear can treat even the strangest of afflictions.
Of course, people's mileage may vary with alternative treatments, but every once in a while, one will grow in popularity, so much so that entrepreneurs try to make it accessible around the world.
That's what happened at one hotel in Scotland that offers an interesting room for guests in need of some natural therapy.
Unique Bunkmates
Welcome to the Monachyle Mhor Hotel, a beautiful residence that recently opened some rather unique rooms.
They're called apipods, wooden huts that have beehives built into the exterior so the soft vibration of thousands of bees buzzing and the faint smell of honey can both be felt throughout the inside.
Charlotte Blacker, a business owner who introduced these huts to the hotel, tried an apipod for the first time in Slovenia as they're already rather popular in Eastern Europe. She decided she wanted to bring this experience back home with her, and thus set up her partnership with Monachyle Mhor.
All Around You
It was an idea that Tom Lewis, the hotel's owner, loved. "We absolutely love the idea of working in harmony with the bees to create this unique experience," he said.
There are six beehives in the hotel's first apipod, hosting a total of 60,000 bees. They're slotted into the floor and in compartments directly under the two twin beds so the vibrations can be directly felt as you fall asleep. The bees also have their own entrances directly to the outdoors, so they're not trapped under the cabin.
What are the proposed benefits, though? Why is a bee hotel room a good idea?
Their Calming Presence
There are a few theories, but note that these are still just theories with no proven testing to back them.
First is that they're believed to help with respiratory conditions, both the physical sensation and the scent. Second is the therapeutic benefit, with the buzzing of bee wings believed to be able to soothe mental health conditions.
"There's loads of therapeutic value with bees. The notes they buzz in help our nervous system. There are trials with people with PTSD," Blacker explained. "The vibrations caused by bees' wings also have a positive energizing effect, which calms and relaxes."
A Brief Stop
Visitors are able to book 45-minute sessions in the apipod if they're just looking for a relaxing break, or they can book an overnight stay and sleep directly atop some bustling beehives.
"We have the perfect spot to do it. The hotel is in a wilderness with freshwater lochs. Everyone has really embraced it," says Blacker. "You de-stress listening to the sounds of the bees going about their daily life, surrounded by the aromas of honey, propolis, nectar, and pollen."
All-Natural Retreat
Each session or stay includes fresh lemon balm tea that's picked from the hotel's garden, some raw honey atop Mena bread, and a snack bar made by Blacker's own health food company.
"Why not spend the day immersed in nature, wild swimming, hiking, and relaxing over lunch before being lulled to sleep by the gentle vibration of thousands of tiny wing beats enveloped in the heavenly scent of warm honey from the hives beneath you?"
Bees Bouncing Back
And though recent years have been rather tough for the hospitality industry, seeing as travel was largely banned for so long and even now some people hesitate before vacationing, Lewis is still dedicated to providing unique and welcoming stays for all visitors.
"The apipod fits with what we already do here, which is to provide our guests with great food, warm hospitality and unforgettable memories."
Sleeping atop tens of thousands of bees definitely qualifies as an unforgettable memory, not to mention the other potential benefits!
