As anyone with an even slightly messy family knows that family drama can get heated sometimes. Whether it plays out on social media or within the home, a lot of people are quick to react when the moment arises, and that's how massive fights break out.
But there are those who wait. They uncover a dirty secret, and they wait. They plot, they plan, and they formulate the perfect revenge that will go down in their family's history. They'll make sure to spring it on as many people as possible in the most lavish of settings. Like a wedding, for example.
This type of revenge was dished out at a wedding in China late last year when the groom exposed just what type of person his bride-to-be was in front of both of their families.
Not only that, but the entire ordeal was caught on camera. It went viral on TikTok, gaining over 18 million likes and tens of thousands of comments debating the situation.
The video begins with the bride and groom walking towards the stage, seemingly at a reception rather than a ceremony. Their guests are seated at tables in front of the stage, and a projection screen is playing idle video behind them.
A woman over a loudspeaker appears to announce the couple as the guests all clap and cheer for them in response. The announcer says that a video showing the couple's history together will start to play, but as the couple turns to face one another, the video on the screen above them changes to what appears to be security camera footage.
The footage, though hard to see in the captured video, clearly has a bed in the center of it. The on-screen text informs us that the screen was displaying footage of the bride sleeping with her sister's husband. Not only was she cheating on her own fiancé, but she was helping her brother-in-law cheat on his own wife, who was pregnant at the time.
The groom immediately starts shouting. Someone translated what he said to "You thought I didn't know?" before chaos erupted, and he was no longer able to be heard. He shoves the bride, who in turn throws the bouquet at him, then turns to storm off stage as the family rushes forward to separate the two from fighting further.
The video was then uploaded to the Chinese social media platform Weibo, where it spread like wildfire.
According to messages from the groom, he had unintentionally caught the cheating taking place when installing a test camera for a surveillance system they had purchased.
There's no clear reporting that explains what took place after the clip abruptly ends, but I think we can all guess what happened to that marriage.
The comments were alight with opinions, but most of them were congratulating the groom for what he did.
Others were confused about why this appeared to take place during the reception and not the ceremony, calling it a waste of everyone's time and money.
Then there were those who balked at the bride's behavior. "She had the nerve to get mad as if she's the victim," one person wrote, a sentiment shared by many commenters.
There was also some more thoughtful discussion taking place. As one user pointed out, "You know she's shunned from everything now. Family ruthlessness when it comes to shame is wild."
Others were confused about why he went through with the marriage anyway, but someone reminded them that it's likely the papers aren't actually filed until later, so this was more about the theatrics than anything else.
No matter the timing, it's a harsh lesson learned. One commenter summed it up as, "So not only did she destroy her own life but her sister's life also."
Was this a lot to go through just for it all to fall to pieces at the end? Absolutely, but we can only imagine how cathartic it was for the groom to have everyone see the bride's deception. At least this way no one could accuse him of lying, nor did the bride have an opportunity to spin it into something else.
There are some more layers to this story, from some believing her cheating to be a response to his awful behavior while others claim this whole setup to be a marketing ploy for an app.
We'll never get the full story, and though it hurts, at least we can all relish in a drama fix that doesn't affect us in the slightest.
