Sometimes your parents can be manipulative and terrible to you.

The key to being able to have a relationship with manipulative parents is knowing how to walk away from their behaviors. How do we do that?

1. Recognize they don’t actually want to help you.

Manipulative people don’t actually want to help you, they want you to conform to a specific way of living which they themselves endorse.

If your parents try to, for example, send you to specific religious services or force you to take certain college courses, they’re not really looking out for you.

They’re trying to manipulate you into being a specific person.

2. Don’t fight with them.

Manipulative people can really grind your gears, there’s no doubt about that. But don’t get down in the mud with them. Don’t get into knock-down, dragged-out fights.

What they want more than anything is for you to feel bad, feel bad for them, and do what they tell you. This brings me to my next point.

3. Be immune to their guilt.

Don’t let their guilt get to you. Guilt is the manipulator’s tool for forcing you to do what they want you to do. Instead, walk away and do what YOU would prefer to do.

Don’t let their guilt penetrate your psyche.

4. Rise above them.

When manipulators begin losing their power, they get down in the mud and try to drag you down too.

They’ll resort to every name they can think of to call you, every accusation that can possibly be floated at you. But don’t fall for it. Rise above it.

Stay out of the mud.

5. Don’t let them cry wolf.

When you don’t get down in the mud with them, when you refuse to fight, when you don’t let them guilt you, and when you finally realize they don’t want to help you, they’ll start crying wolf.

They’ll start insisting that you have to do things for them that they need. But you don’t. Don’t fall for it.

6. Be accountable for yourself.

At the end of the day, this is all you can do. You don’t truly get support from manipulative parents.
