5 Things That Happen When You Become Emotionally Intelligent

Emotional intelligence, that is the ability to perceive emotions as well as regulate your own emotions well, isn’t a you-have-it-or-you-don’t type thing. All of us have it, but sometimes it needs to be developed over time. You learn emotional intelligence in the same way you learn to read or learn calculus. When you do find yourself emotionally intelligent, this is what happens.

1. You become more self-aware.

We’re all somewhat self-aware. It’s part of being conscious. But self-awareness is taken to a new height when you become emotionally intelligent. You aren’t just aware, but you understand yourself and why you have the feelings you do in ways you never did before. You become a fuller person.

2. You manage your life better.

People with low EQs have trouble managing their lives because they’re guided by pure, unmitigated emotion. When you become emotionally intelligent, you learn to check your baggage and be a productive individual, guided by reason, not heart.

3. You become a strong leader.

Not only can you manage yourself better, but you manage others better as well. You can see the world clearly and, as a result, are an excellent leader.

4. You become an empath.

Emotional intelligence isn’t just about you, it’s about the people around you too. When you learn to understand your own emotions, you learn to understand how other people feel too. Empathy is soft-wired in our brains. Part of being human is sharing the experiences of others.

5. Your social skills will be unmatched.

With greater empathy, your ability to read people and understand how they feel leads you to social skills unlike any you’ve had. You know just what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. People will flock to you.
