According to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute, the country has been running on nothing but renewable energy since December, 2014.
For an area as large as Costa Rice to run on nothing but renewable energy is truly remarkable; however, Costa Rica is a small country.
Costa Rica has received massive amounts of rainfall recently. The hydroelectric plants in the country have taken advantage of these downpours.
The government agency states that no fossil fuels have been used for generate electricity for the past 75 days!
Not only is the country filled with hydroelectric plants, but they also have a growing number of geothermal energy sites. Currently, geothermal energy accounts for about 10% of the regions energy reserves.
“It’s good news that more geothermal will be coming on board, as there are obvious downsides of being too reliant on hydropower, especially run-of-the-river systems, which can be hindered by seasonal changes in water flow,” .Jake Richardson, of Clean Technica told Science Alert.
“Droughts can also severely impact power supplies. And there are also some environmental downsides to hydroelectric dams more generally, namely the impact on riparian ecosystems and passing fish,” he added.
