For most of us, arguing isn’t necessarily the highlight of our day. While it can sometimes be stressful and difficult, there are times when one must realize that they simply aren’t going to get anywhere and make a graceful exit from the conversation.
When you find yourself trying to reason or argue with someone who just doesn’t have the normal thought process of an empathetic human being, it’s probably time to call it and walk away.
Here are 5 signs to watch out for, that mean you’re probably arguing with a psychopath and you may not want to continue wasting your breath.
This type of person is insanely frustrating to try and argue with, because they believe themselves to have a personal understanding of every life experience, despite their actual lack of adversity or struggle.
They think because they can perhaps imagine what a situation might have felt like, that they have the right to speak on it with authority.
They’re incorrect and illogical, but they don’t and won’t see it no matter how clearly you explain.
These people might start out seeming perfectly cool and collected, reasonable and willing to listen to a different perspective and then just moments later resort to flinging personal insults and overly emotional reactions.
They can’t stick consistently to one mode of behavior.
One minute they might be compassionate and respectful and the next, spiteful and ignorant. There’s really no way to win against that.
Psychopathy tends to overlap with certain other personality disorders commonly, such as narcissistic personality disorder.
A person with these tendencies believes themselves superior to pretty much any and everyone they come into contact with, and it shows in their conversation and especially when they debate.
They’re not interested in learning new information, only proving that they’re correct and know better than you do.
Psychopaths are inherently manipulative.
Playing the victim and passing the buck comes naturally to them, it’s all part of their abnormal psychology and maladjusted social behavior.
If they make a mistake in calculation or get called out on using bad information and incorrect facts, don’t expect them to own up to it.
They’ll simply find a way to make it someone else’s fault and claim that it should have no effect on their own credibility.
Once an argument gets a little on the intense side, especially if they’re beginning to feel threatened in any way, a person with psychopathic tendencies will immediately react by trying to pin their own negative traits onto you.
If they feel they’re being painted or seen as angry, untrustworthy or dumb, that’s exactly what they will try to say you are.
They’ll take every bad characteristic of their personality and call you out on it, as if it’s actually your problem.
This is simply a desperate attempt at deflection, but it’s not exactly subtle and most people can tell when it’s happening.
If you’ve reached this point, your argument definitely isn’t going to benefit anybody, and it’s a good time to step away from the conversation.
