Brother Creates Prom Dress For His Sister From Scratch When Their Parents Can’t Afford One

When we think of siblings we often think of petty arguments and rivalry. Sisters tend to steal each other clothes’ while brothers fight over nothing. Yet, that is not always the case. Siblings have some of the strongest bonds as they share a certain level of understanding no one else could share, while loving each other unconditionally.

Maverick Francisco Oyao’s story is just an example of that. His family lives in the Philippines and they don’t have a lot of money. They felt really bad when they couldn’t afford to rent a prom dress for their daughter Lu Asey. So, her brother decided to take matters into his own hands

He Had Never Designed Anything Like This

When Maverick found out that the rental fee was too expensive for his family, he figured the only solution was to get creative and make one himself. This was going to be quite the task as he had never actually made a dress before, especially for such an important event.

Documenting his journey on Facebook, he wrote: ” It all started with the school’s first confirmed announcement of the upcoming junior and senior prom. There is a required prom dress that is very expensive to rent, but I can’t afford to rent it.”

He Sketched A Design Down To The Smallest Detail

First things first, 21-year-old Maverick had to come up with a design. He had no idea where to start and whether he’d actually have time to make it all happen. He explains: “I didn’t expect myself to be on time. I even doubted myself. But God is really good. “

Luckily, Malverick was able to get his community to help buy the materials he needed, which only cost a fraction of the rental of an already made dress. Now, it was time to get to work.

Inspiration Can Be Found Anywhere

Since Maverick basically had no experience, he did what any young man would do when they don’t have answers and he turned to Google. He watched Youtube videos on prom dresses and came across Michael Cinco’s spring/summer collection. He decided this would be his inspiration.

The next step would be to decide on a color palette and to conceptualize the design: “Day after day, I started to get excited about the result I got and I didn’t even imagine this amazing result,” he shares.

The Prom Theme Was A Winter Ball

Maverick concluded that the easiest way to go about the dress would be to stick to the theme of the prom: a winter ball. This means that he would create the dress with a spectrum of blue and white fabric.

Keep in mind that Mave was not a designer himself. He was simply studying culture and arts education at university, so he used all the skills that he could, but mostly came from a place of talent.

Go Big Or Go Home

Once Maverick actually got to work and started seeing the dress come to life, he decided that this must be a piece for his sister to stand out in, as the center of the crowd. He wanted to give her the princess silhouette of her dreams so he created a big poofy skirt

For the top, he decided that the best way to go about it would be to hand paint it himself. He even created white rose petals from scratch. Mave was spending hours on his masterpiece, looking after every detail.

The Final Product Was Breathtaking

All in all, it took Maverick about a week and a half to finish the dream dress, which considering the amount of work that went into it is quite impressive! The custom-made dress made Lu Asey stand out and feel beautiful.

This was very fitting with the prom’s date being on Valentine’s day, the day of love. She posed proudly showcasing all angles of the fabulous dress.

Maverick’s Talent Made Him An Internet Sensation

The brother, pictured on the right received a lot of praise online for his talented act of kindness. The post in which he shared all steps of his progress has been reacted to by almost 100 thousand people.

The siblings have since been the focus of many news articles with many congratulating Maverick not only for stepping in to help his sister face the odds, but also for his incredible design talent.

The Future Looks Bright

Maverick is only 21 years old and has many years of success still ahead of him. Even though fame wasn’t his intention, the amount of positive feedback he’s received has earned him a great reputation.

Now he’s getting ready for a possible career in design, already working on a new design for an upcoming beauty pageant. From the looks of it so far, is almost guaranteed to blow us away like his sister’s prom dress!
