This Short Video Perfectly Simulates What Life Is Like For A Person With Autism

Autism is a growing health concern for the nation. 1 in every 68 US children have a autism spectrum disorder, a 30 percent increase from the past year’s 1 in 88 according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Doctors and researchers are still uncertain what the exact causes are. It is believed that the disorder is caused by many different factors, not just one or two core causes.

There are varying degrees of autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Both are general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are defined by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.

Each case of ASD is very distinct and there doesn’t appear to be a consistent pattern. A person may have poor motor function but excel at math or science. Another person with similar motor function impairments may not have the same mental gifts. Autism Speaks is an awareness campaign giving voice to people who have ASD.

The video below was made by the National Autistic Society. It shows how an autistic person might view a simple trip to the mall differently than others. High sensory perception is a marker of autism. Different people are more sensitive to different stimulants. Next time you see someone having a breakdown, remember that they are experiencing a different reality than you. We are all trying to deal with life using our gifts and talents.
