What if none of this was real? Would it change anything? We could be living in a simulated reality with no control over it and nothing we can do about it. A group of technologists and physicists believe that in the simulation theory and think that they will prove it just like they once proved that the Earth. If they do, it would change everything.
It would completely alter the meaning of our lives. If the simularion heory is real then we’re all living in some version of a big Sims Game with no way to turn it off.

It’s scary to think that our lives are meaningless stimulations with no personal purpose. “The Simulation Theory” is the belief that our reality exists in a computer simulation. This means that it has to be controlled by someone or something else and at any point, they can interfere and take over our free will. The Simulation Theory can be traced back to philosophers like Descartes and isn’t a new idea.
Centuries ago Descartes believed that there was some kind of higher intelligent civilization, like a futuristic human race that ran simulations of their ancestors thanks to their advanced technology. The more that we advance with technology, the more this theory seems possible.
Not only is Elon Musk preparing to leave Earth for Mars in case we make it inhabitable, but he is preparing to leave this universe altogether in case it is all a simulation. He believes that Earth isn’t real and that we’re probably living in a computer simulation.
In a conference, he announced: “there’s a billion to one chance we’re living in base reality.” Musk isn’t alone in this way of thinking. Many in Silicon valley are interested in the hypothesis and are open to the possibility that what we experience as reality is actually a giant computer simulation created by a more sophisticated intelligence. It’s like our very own Matrix! All ideas come from somewhere…
The biggest question if this theory is real is “how does it work”? And “who operates it?” It all comes down to consciousness. It wouldn’t require any supernatural means as consciousness could be replicated as proven by the reproduction theory.
The universe is said to work mathematically which means that it could be broken up into pixels just like video games. A scientist at NASA explains: “Even things that we think of as continuous-time, energy, space, volume – all have a finite limit to their size. If that’s the case, then our universe is both computable and finite. Those properties allow the universe to be simulated….” He adds: “Quite frankly if we are not living in a simulation, it is an extraordinarily unlikely circumstance.”
As for who created the simulation, the scientist says it would be our future selves.
Luckily, for anyone who is starting to worry that we might be stuck in our own Matrix forever, there are apparently two tech billionaires secretly engaging scientists to work on breaking us out of the simulation.
And if our lives really are controlled by a computer just like the Matrix then it’s possible that its system is somewhat flawed and we could hack it and break out of it. Just one question: blue or red pill people?

Nick Bostrom from Oxfiird University built on Rene Descartes’s thoughts on living in a stimulation pointed out that current trends in technology like virtual reality and progress in scanning the human brain could be how we eventually reach a point of being able to simulate it.
It’s not far off from virtual reality. Elon Musk agrees and explains: “Forty years ago we had Pong – two rectangles and a dot. That’s where we were. Now 40 years later, we have photorealistic, 3D simulations with millions of people playing simultaneously and it’s getting better every year. And soon we’ll have virtual reality, we’ll have augmented reality,” “If you assume any rate of improvement at all, then the games will become indistinguishable from reality.” Thinking about how much technology has taken over our lives is already blurring the line between reality and virtual similation.
Can you imagine what would happen if we knew how to reproduce consciousness? We would be able to clone it and preserve it. We could even control the laws of physics and defy death by living on virtually forever. “Soon there will be nothing technical standing in the way to making machines that have their own consciousness,” said Rich Terrile, a scientist at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
We would even be able to project our consciousness inside of video games and completely control them with our minds, which brings us closer and closer to the possibility of a simulation. All of this could have already happened and now our stimulated versions are discovering it again.
Does your brain hurt yet? Who knows what point in time we would actually be in if this was really a simulation. Maybe we’ve lived all of this before but our future selves hope we make better decisions. At the rate that technology is going, the possibilities are endless: “If one progresses at the current rate of technology a few decades into the future, very quickly we will be a society where there are artificial entities living in simulations that are much more abundant than human beings.”
The chances of us being real are declining: “If in the future there are more digital people living in simulated environments than there are today, then what is to say we are not part of that already?” asks Terrile.
Don’t let this keep you up at night just yet because for now we till don’t have concrete proof: “In order to make the argument in the first place, we need to know what the fundamental laws of physics are where the simulations are being made. And if we are in a simulation then we have no clue what the laws of physics are. What I teach at MIT would be the simulated laws of physics,” explains Max Tegmark, a professor of physics at MIT.
He’s not the only skeptic. Harvard theoretical physicist Lisa Randall reassures us: I don’t see that there’s really an argument for it,” she said. “There’s no real evidence.” We could keep putting the theory into the test but until we make any more discoveries, we might as well keep living each day to the fullest and assume that our happiness and success are entirely up to us, not some computer.
Maybe one day we’ll have the ability to create our own simulations and maybe we’ll learn how to control consciousness and really tap into the power of the mind to create endless possibilities between reality and the virtual. For now, it’s still possible to tap into our own consciousness and reveal aspects of our identity that sit hidden in our subconscious.
