A UPS driver swooped in to save the day when he saw a concerning scene on his delivery route. Raheem Cooper was driving through a neighborhood in Valdosta, Georgia, when he saw a woman lying on the ground outside.
The front door of the house was open, and so was the driver's door of her car, but she was on the ground between the two. Not only that, she was bleeding from her head.
Raheem rushed over to her immediately. "I ran to her," he told USA TODAY in an interview. "She was conscious but she couldn't get up. Her eyes were open and everything.”
He urged her to stay still while he called for an ambulance. He first checked the house to see if anyone else was there to help, but it was just him, so he dialed 911 and explained to them the scene he stumbled upon.
As he anxiously awaited the ambulance's arrival, he realized her face had been resting against the hot pavement, so he grabbed a bottle of water and started rubbing it on her to help keep her cool under the summer sun.
Though he was told not to move her, he still didn't want to keep her face against the asphalt, so he ran to his truck and grabbed some UPS bags to put between her head and the ground. "Something in my heart, I couldn't let her just stay on that hot pavement like that. I just did the best I could without injuring her.”
She originally had no memory of who or where she was at the time of the accident. Once she had recovered a bit, she was able to identify herself and her granddaughter, Kayla Cochran, who rushed to the hospital after she was told what happened.
When she got there, she found a note that Raheem had left with his phone number on it. "I called him to find out exactly what happened and how he found her, and to tell him thank you for saving her life," she said. “We've been connected since then.”

Paramedics eventually arrived and took the woman, 78-year-old Marie Coble, away on a stretcher. She had been carrying groceries when she suffered her fall, so Raheem started picking up what she dropped to bring them inside. "I noticed the milk was warm, so it's no telling how long she was out there," he said.
After some testing and a day spent at the hospital, it was determined that Marie had experienced an intracranial hemorrhage, otherwise known as a brain bleed.
Unfortunately, Marie's condition became rather complicated. She's had to travel to many different cities and hospitals for procedures, surgeries, and specialist visits. To help lighten that burden, Raheem started a GoFundMe to help with the cost of medical bills, travel, and rehabilitation.
In fact, Raheem has stayed in contact with Marie and her family since the incident. He visits her frequently and video calls with Kayla when he can't make it to see her in person.
"I told Miss Marie she's my grandmother now," Raheem said while laughing. "It's almost like they're my family now. That's my adopted family at this point."
Kayla called Raheem "our angel" for not only saving Marie, but also keeping Kayla updated when she can't see her grandmother and for remaining involved throughout this entire experience.
"He saved her life, and most people these days wouldn't stop to do that, unfortunately," she said. “For him to just be there in the right place at the right time and stop and help her, literally saved her life.”
"That's something that I would have wanted somebody to do for my family," said Raheem. “I just thank God I was [there] at the perfect time.”
