Have you ever wondered why some women are beautiful and smart and yet still single or in starting positions? Often, it’s because men feel intimidated by them. Whether this is a good or bad thing is undetermined. On one hand, it means these women are excelling in some way, but on the other hand, their success or beauty should not be threatening if it’s truly respected.
The only way to get a better understanding is to get inside a man’s head and let them speak for themselves. Here is what men most commonly find to be most intimidating in a woman.
“The same thing that makes a guy intimidating to other guys, power. A formidable power in any form, intellect, physicality, social mastery, greater skill, superior debate ability, any power that is felt to be overwhelmingly superior will tend to intimidate another person when they feel that they are unable to compete on the same level.” – Brian Zahn / Quora
This power is even more intimidating when men feel as though they have less of it. This is often what causes toxic power dynamics, as men try to gain some of it back.
“In my experience men are intimidated by successful, independent women. They are drawn to you because you know who you are, won’t tolerate BS, and can stand on your own. Then they hate you because you know who you are, you’re successful, independent, can stand on your own, and won’t tolerate BS.” – Dawn Ekhardt / Quora
Being successful shouldn’t be a double-edged sword, but in a world where everyone is out for themselves, men often feel the need to come out on top.
“What makes a woman intimidating to men is when they’re unfamiliar with her type of aura. Men are very confident when a woman likes them and it’s obvious. And they lack confidence when they’re unsure that the woman likes them. Normal men want some type of signal or a global set of signals before they approach a woman.” – Darrell Watson / Quora
On the other hand, all they have to do is ask and find out.
“When a woman really has her life together it intimidates me, and makes me feel like she would not want a relationship with me because I feel I do not have my life together in comparison.” – poopybuttheart / Quora
This is usually not the case. If anything it usually means that she’s in a place where she’s ready to settle down with the right person, but not willing to settle for the wrong one.
“Social butterflies who are bubbly and get along with seemingly everyone. They are simultaneously super welcoming and very intimidating to me.” – brokenboysoldiers / Reddit
One would think that being a social butterfly would be less intimidating because it means that men have to do less work in keeping a conversation going, but it looks like they’re just no winning.
”My interpretation of ‘Intimidating’ is that a guy doesn’t really see you making any room for him. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but basically, you might be coming off as too self-sufficient.” -LivingShdw / Reddit
Self-sufficient is better than co-dependent. This is a sign of a woman who is happy with or without a man. She doesn’t “need” a man to fill a void but rather looks for a partner.
“I get intimidated by overconfident girls. I can handle really pretty and good at sports/whatever else.” – Snowbattt/ Reddit
It’s unclear what defines a woman as “overconfident.” A woman should be able to assert herself and know what she wants without being reprimanded for it. There’s a difference between judgemental and confidence, but confidence itself should not be intimidating.
