While pregnancies happen all the time, the expectation is usually to have one child at a time. For this twenty-year-old mom, life had other plans. Instead of blessing her with just one kid, it gave her three at once. She already had a young daughter who was still not even two years old. Now, having triplets has its own set of complications as that’s three times the effort for the body to carry them and make sure they’re healthy. Still, the young couple conquered all odds and welcomed identical triplets, and now have 4 children under the age of 2!

A Unique Couple

Most twenty-one-year-olds are still in college, with their biggest worry being when to go home for Christmas. They barely have one foot into adulthood, with the other one clinging on to their carefree teenage years. Yet, this twenty-one-year-old was already working as an administrative assistant. She and her partner didn’t consider themselves to be like most people their ages, nor did they have the “typical” lives of people their age.

“We obviously don’t have the typical life of other people our age,” explains Ellie the mother. Yet receiving news of triplets would be a shock to any mother, at any age. Luckily Ellie and her partner were quite mature and welcomed the challenge: “It is hard but we’ve always been family orientated so we have made it work. The nurses were impressed by how mature we are when we were in NICU with the boys.”

A Hearbreaking Miscariage

This wasn’t Ellie’s first pregnancy. It seems like she dreamed of being a mother for a while and actually got close more than once. Not only does she already have a two-year-old daughter, but she was pregnant before in 2020.

Unfortunately, the couple suffered a terrible miscarriage back in November 2020 but within a few months,  they found out they were pregnant again. This was likely as exciting as it was frightening. What was even more shocking was when the couple went for their twelve-week scan, only to be told their second child was actually three. Once you lose a child, it can be traumatic to be exposed to the risk of losing it again. This pregnancy would not be easy either and from the minute the triplets would be born, the challenge would stack up even more: “It was an emotional rollercoaster as they (their health) were so up and down.”

The Miracle Babies

Everything about this family is out of the ordinary. The parents are still very young. Ellie is twenty-one and Billy is twenty and with these triplets, they have already extended their family by 3 members. Usually, triplets are non identical and are created when two eggs are fertilised and one goes on to grow into twins. However, all triplets here shared the same placenta.

When they were finally born, even arriving twelve weeks early, they ended up beating odds of 200 million to 1. Archie, Albie, and Arthur had only had a forty percent chance of survival at the time making them the ultimate miracle babies.

They Have Some Medical Obstacles

A birth this complicated birth had isks. The triplets arrived at Kettering General hospital via c-section. The babies had multiple health issues upon arrival,  including sepsis and jaundice, and brain bleeds. They were taken to the Intensive Care Unit right after their birth where they stayed for several weeks to fight for their survival.

The triplets faced these obstacles with strength, just like their parents. Eventually, they were all able to go home to be reunited with their older sister Lola.

The Couple Is Often Congratulated

These parents may be young but they’re not afraid to share their journey with the world and open themselves up to mistakes and lessons. Every day is a new adventure as it is a learning opportunity for them, but they have no regrets.

“Strangers always stop us in the street to look at the boys and they always say ‘well done’ when they realize how young we are,” Ellie explains.

Routine Is Key

The big question is “how do you go about your every day with not one, not two, not three, but four little humans who entirely depend on you at all times for all their basic needs?!” Well, Ellie finds that the key is in routine, she explains: “fortunately, the hospital got the triplets into a good routine and fed them every 4 hours. Now, they only wake up once in the night.”

However even a routine can be exhausting and leaves little to no time for sleep and self-care, but Ellie thinks that it’s all worth it. “I wouldn’t have it any other day as it is so rewarding seeing them grow up. Billy and I absolutely love it but we have no plans on having another baby!” For the foreseeable future, all her attention is on three kids, and they’re quite a handful.

Everything Happens For A Reason

Going from a family of 3 to a family of six is no easy change, nor is it cheap. It costs a lot to keep every member healthy and happy. Ellie keeps her community updated on Instagram and they’re often quick to help in her time of need. The rest is about balancing Lola’s terrible twos with the triplet’s ever-growing needs. ‘

“We have to balance our time to make sure everyone is having their fair share of attention.” The couple has had to upgrade their five-seater car to a seven-seater. They go through approximately 25 nappies per day and 18 bottles, as well as a tub of formula a day. it’s not easy but they’re doing it!
